How To Remove Tarnish From Silver With Baking Soda
Most people have silver jewelry or silver forks and spoons around the house. Anybody that has them knows how quickly tarnish can mar the silver’s shine. While polishing silver may not always be on the top of everyone’s to do list, maintaining the shine of your silver is something that should be done occasionally.
You can buy silver polish off store shelves. Commercial products are readily available. but sometimes are unnecessary. Baking soda is something most people keep around the house. It has a variety of household uses aside from removing tarnish from silver, including cleaning without using harsh chemicals, cooking and deoderizing the fridge.
One way to use baking soda to clean tarnished silver is to start by spooning out a small amount in a bowl. Stir in a few drops of water until a paste is formed. This is what you’ll use to polish the silver.
Using a soft cloth, or toothbrush if you’ve got nooks and crannies to get into, gently polish the silver piece with the baking soda paste. Here’s what we started with:

This is a great way to clean up jewelry in a pinch before rushing out the door. Using baking soda to remove tarnish also eliminates the odor of store bought polish since it’s just baking soda and water.
